Florence: Our Favourite City in Italy

photographer: Andrea Calvano

Walking through Florence is like walking through a Renaissance painting, every street is simply gorgeous. Considered to be the "birthplace of the Renaissance", Florence has so much art and history that it's easy to get wrapped up in its charm and never want to leave. The historic city centre is also quite small so it’s easily walkable. All of this combined makes Florence our favourite city in the world. Read on to discover some of the things we love to do in Florence!

Places to see

Florence Cathedral and Duomo

This massive cathedral is made out of pink, white and green marble. It features a gothic style facade and a huge dome designed by Brunelleschi (the biggest brick one ever made). The Florence Cathedral is not only beautiful but totally unique and no trip to Florence is complete without a visit!

Ponte Vecchio

The origins of this stunning bridge that crosses over the Arno river is believed to date back to Roman times. The Ponte Vecchio is lined with little jewelry stores on both sides. We love to visit the bridge at sunset.

Piazza della Repubblica

Our favourite place in all of Florence, Piazza della Repubblica is a pretty little square filled with cafes, a beautiful arch, a column, and a merry-go-round. Back during Ancient Roman times, the site of Piazza della Repubblica was the location of the forum or the heart of the Roman city. The Colonna dell’Abbondanza (the column in the square) is located where two of the most important streets of the Roman city intersected. We love this piazza for its history and also because it’s where our favourite cafe in Florence is located, Cafe Gilli!

The Uffizzi

The Uffizzi is one of the most famous art museums in the world and with good reason, it houses many important works including many from the Italian Renaissance period.

Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze

Although much smaller than the Uffizzi, the Galleria is worth a visit too. It houses Michelangelo’s Davide sculpture, something you have to see to believe.

The Boboli Gardens

The Boboli Gardens are a huge historic park located behind the Palazzo Pitti. These gorgeous gardens include statues, fountains and caves.

Where to eat

Cafe Gilli

Cafe Gilli is a beautiful cafe located in Piazza della Repubblica. It’s the perfect place to grab a cup of coffee or tea in the morning and plan your day or sit and relax with a cocktail at night.

La Spada

For a cute little restaurant where you can eat typical Florentine dishes at a good price, we love La Spada.

La Giostra

A gorgeous restaurant with delicious Florentine food.

Mercato Centrale Florence

A large food hall in Florence where you can find traditional Italian food, international food, beer and wine. We love going and getting something from a bunch of different vendors to try and share.

All’Antico Vinaio

The best sandwich you’ll ever eat. This place usually has a crazy line but it’s so worth it.

 Bars

Santo Spirito neighbourhood

We love this part of the city as it offers a more local experience and it’s super lively and fun at night. For a good guide visit here: https://girlinflorence.com/2016/02/12/santo-spirito-neighborhood-guide/

Locale

A gorgeous bar located inside of a palace in downtown Florence, what's not to love?
