Oil cleansing is a hot topic lately and it truly is for everyone, even if you are someone who tends to stay away from oils in their skincare routine. When the oil cleansing method is performed properly it can deep clean, exfoliate, hydrate, brighten, balance and completely transform the skin.

Oil cleansing leaves your skin feeling unbelievably clean without feeling dry. You might even notice less blackheads and congestion over time. Aestheticians all over social media praise oil cleansing and often use it as the first step in a double cleanse routine, which is great if you are still nervous about leaving oil residue on the surface of your skin.

If you think you didn’t like oil cleansing after giving it a try, it’s probably because you were doing it wrong. Part of the reason why I love the oil cleansing method so much is that it forces you to slow down, be present, and truly connect with your skin during your routine instead of rushing through a typical cleanse.

To Effectively Oil Cleanse:

Begin with a dry skin surface, work the oil into the face for about 60 seconds without water, then you will remove it with a damp washcloth. For the second pass you will combine oil and water on your washcloth and gently massage it over the skin for another minute or two. You then finish your oil cleanse with a fresh side of your washcloth, using only water to remove all the oil. This technique ensures a very thorough cleanse that will leave your face soft and squeaky clean without impairing your skin’s natural moisture barrier.

Today there are so many skin care brands recognizing the popularity of oil cleansing and wanting a piece of the action that it has fully gone mainstream. With so many oil cleansing products available, it might be confusing deciding on an option best for your skin. I always look for jojoba based oils for cleansing because the waxy structure of jojoba is very similar to that of your own sebum. Jojoba oil is full of antioxidants, fatty acids, antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties and has the ability to restore a compromised skin barrier. I recommend cleansing with jojoba oil all the time when a client's skin is feeling sensitized, dehydrated, or inflamed as an easy skin reset that will bring the skin back to balance after using too many stripping products for prolonged periods of time. You can add oil cleansing into your routine once or twice per day in the morning and/or night time, or start with once a week during your self care skin rituals for an elevated deep cleaning experience.
