With beauty services deemed non essential, now is the perfect time (while hiding at home) to grow out your over plucked DIY, or botched wax job brows from that time when you ignored the little voice in your head and agreed to letting your nail lady do your brows.

You can live up to your full brow potential with time, but it might not be as easy as simply not touching your brows. Follow these tips to encourage brow growth.

Tip 1: Grow from within

Limit adrenal stressors like caffeine, and add silica rich foods to your diet such as leafy greens (and the stems), peppers, cucumbers, celery, asparagus and berries. Silica is a mineral that encourages collagen formation and supports healthy nails, skin, and hair! You can also get your silica content from drinking nettle tea, or taking nettle supplements.

Tip 2: Protect your brows

Use a brow serum or oil to nourish the brows and stimulate growth. Carrier oils such as castor oil, jojoba oil, and coconut oil as well as extracts of rosemary, lavender, and horsetail are all beneficial ingredients to look for in hair growth serums or when blending your own hair oil. Apply a small amount before bed as the final step of your skincare routine. Also be mindful of your skincare and makeup products, keeping them away from your brows. Your active exfoliating serums, and even foundation within the brow hairs can inhibit growth.

Tip 3: More friction, more problems

It is so common for people to have thinner brow tails, and this could be from the friction caused from sleeping on your side. Using silk/satin pillowcases, or transitioning into a back sleeper will save your precious brow hairs if this is something affecting your growth. Be gentle with your brows while cleansing your face, and be mindful not to tug or pull on the brows if you use any skin tools to massage the face. Even adjusting the pressure you use when applying your brow pencil to prevent scraping the skin can have an impact on brow hair growth.

Tip 4: Trim instead of Tweezing, waxing, or threading

An occasional trim will help maintain your brows without them looking too unruly during the growing process, but it’s important to do it the right way. You’ll need a pair of brow scissors (like the ArteStile Brow Scissors) and a spoolie brush to comb the brows upward and out for visibility when creating your shape. Less is more, when you trim too much you will end up with patches in your brows, so if you think you might get scissor happy you can avoid this step altogether and opt for tweezing only. Focus on the most irrelevant stray brow hairs to your shape (like middle brow hairs or hairs growing down on the eyelid). (Shop our tweezers here).

Growing your brow hairs does take patience and time, but try not to be frustrated or obsessive with hairs that seem out of place. Some people’s brows will bounce back within a couple months, while others can take up to a year to start even noticing growth. Every little hair matters when creating a balanced brow and what seems like useless stray hair today, might be the arch maker of tomorrow.
